Grading & Property Leveling in Rome, GA
Grading is how ground gets shaped to shed water and be usable. Low spots that hold water, ruts, washed-out slopes and yards that drain toward a house are all grading problems.
Tony's has done dirt work in Northwest Georgia for decades and can bring in dirt or gravel as part of the job.

What grading does
Grading moves and shapes soil so water runs where it should and the surface is even enough to use. In a yard that usually means filling low areas, cutting high spots and setting a fall away from the house. On a build site it means establishing a level pad and drainage before anything goes up.
Grading is often paired with other work — after a removal or clearing, before sod or hydroseeding, or alongside driveway and gravel work.
Signs a property needs grading
- Water standing in the yard after rain
- Runoff moving toward the house, crawl space or garage
- Ruts, washouts and bare eroded areas
- Uneven ground that is rough to mow or walk
- A new lawn, sod or seeding going in over uneven ground
- A pad needed for a shop, barn, garage or drive
What a grading project may involve
- Looking at where water comes from and where it needs to go
- Cutting high areas and filling low areas to set a fall
- Hauling in dirt or hauling out excess material
- Shaping swales or drainage routes where water needs a path
- Compacting and smoothing the finished surface
- Stabilizing bare soil afterward with sod, seed or hydroseeding
Residential and commercial work
Yard grading, drainage corrections, driveway grading and pads for outbuildings are the most common residential requests.
Site grading for commercial lots, drives and parking areas is handled as well, generally alongside gravel and hauling work.
Grading questions
- Can grading help with water standing in my yard?
- Usually yes. Standing water is often a low spot or a slope pushing water the wrong direction. Reshaping the ground so water has somewhere to go is the first thing to look at.
- Do you bring in dirt?
- Yes. Tony's hauls dirt and gravel, so fill can be brought in as part of the grading work.
- Should grading happen before sod?
- Yes. Grading first gives sod, seed or hydroseed an even surface that drains, which makes a big difference in how the lawn establishes.
- Can you grade a gravel driveway?
- Yes. Driveway grading, regraveling and drainage along a drive are regular jobs.
- Can you build a pad for a shop or barn?
- Yes. Pads for outbuildings, garages and shops are part of the dirt work Tony's does.
- How is grading priced?
- It depends on the size of the area, how much material has to move and access for equipment. Estimates are free.
