Hydroseeding in Rome, GA & Northwest Georgia
Hydroseeding sprays a slurry of seed, mulch and tackifier over bare ground. The mulch holds moisture against the seed and helps keep it in place, which makes it a practical way to establish grass over larger areas.
It is often the right answer after clearing or grading, when there is more open ground than sod would sensibly cover.

How hydroseeding works
The mix is applied wet, so it coats the soil evenly and stays put better than broadcast seed on a slope. As the mulch breaks down it keeps moisture near the seed through germination.
Grass comes in over weeks rather than instantly. In exchange, hydroseeding covers ground at a lower cost per square foot than sod and works well on areas too large or too rough for rolls.
Good candidates for hydroseeding
- Large bare areas after clearing, grading or construction
- Slopes and banks where loose seed would wash
- Thin lawns being renovated over a season
- Erosion control on newly disturbed soil
- Acreage where sod would be impractical
- Areas around new drives, pads and drainage work
What a hydroseeding job may involve
- Grading and smoothing the soil so seed has good contact
- Removing rock, roots and debris from the surface
- Spraying the seed, mulch and tackifier mix evenly
- Covering slopes and edges where washing is likely
- Talking through the watering schedule during germination
- Following up with additional work where cover is thin
Residential and commercial work
New lawns, rebuilt yards and larger residential lots after clearing or grading.
Disturbed ground on commercial sites, road banks and detention areas is a common hydroseeding application.
Hydroseeding questions
- What is hydroseeding?
- A sprayed mixture of grass seed, mulch and tackifier applied over prepared soil. The mulch holds moisture and helps hold the seed in place while it germinates.
- How long before grass comes up?
- Germination generally starts within one to a few weeks depending on temperature, seed and water. Filling in takes longer than that, and consistent watering is the biggest factor.
- Is hydroseeding cheaper than sod?
- Per square foot, usually yes — which is why it is often chosen for larger areas. Sod is still preferred when an instant finished lawn is the goal.
- Does hydroseeding work on slopes?
- Yes. The tackifier in the mix helps hold seed on a bank where dry seed would wash away.
- Do I need to water hydroseed?
- Yes. Keeping the surface consistently moist through germination is essential. Irrigation can be discussed if hand watering is not practical.
- Should the ground be graded first?
- Yes. Smooth, debris-free soil gives far better results, and Tony's handles the grading as part of the same project.
