Retaining Walls in Rome, GA
A retaining wall holds soil where you want it. On the hilly lots common around Rome, walls are what turn a slope into level yard and keep dirt from ending up in the driveway.
Tony's builds landscape retaining walls as part of its hardscape and dirt work.

What a retaining wall does
A wall holds back a grade change. That could be a short wall creating a planting bed, or a taller wall cutting a flat area into a slope for a patio, drive or lawn.
The wall you see sits on a compacted base with drainage and backfill behind it. Those details are what decide whether a wall stays straight, so they are not places to cut corners.
When a retaining wall makes sense
- A slope taking up yard that could be level
- Soil washing downhill onto a drive, patio or lawn
- A grade change beside a driveway or parking area
- Terracing needed for beds or planting areas
- A flat area being cut in for a patio or building
- An old wall leaning, bulging or failing
What a wall project may involve
- Laying out the wall and checking the grade above and below
- Excavating for the base and footing area
- Installing and compacting base material
- Setting block or material in courses, checked as it goes
- Providing drainage and backfill behind the wall
- Finishing grade, sod or bedding above and below
Residential and commercial work
Back yard terracing, driveway edges, bed walls and slope corrections at homes.
Grade changes, parking edges and landscaped areas on commercial property.
Retaining Walls questions
- What size retaining wall do I need?
- It depends on the height of the grade change, the soil and what sits above the wall. We look at all of that in person before quoting.
- Why do retaining walls fail?
- Usually poor base preparation or no drainage behind the wall. Water pressure behind a wall is what pushes it out.
- Can a wall stop erosion?
- It can hold a slope in place, and paired with grading and grass cover it addresses most residential erosion problems.
- Can you replace an existing wall?
- Yes. Leaning or failing walls can be taken out and rebuilt with proper base and drainage.
- Do you grade and plant around a new wall?
- Yes. Grading, sod, seeding and bedding around the finished wall can be part of the project.
- How is a wall priced?
- By length, height, material, access and how much excavation is involved. Estimates are free.
