Stump Grinding in Rome, GA

A stump left in a yard is a mowing obstacle, a trip hazard and a place for insects and sprouts. Grinding takes it below grade so the ground can be filled, leveled and planted.

Tony's grinds stumps left from its own removals and stumps that have been sitting for years.

Grinding versus full stump removal

Grinding uses a cutting wheel to chew the stump and the top of the main root flare down below ground level. It leaves a mix of grindings and soil that can be raked out or filled with dirt. It does not dig out the entire root system.

Full excavation — digging the stump and roots out with equipment — leaves a much larger hole and is usually only needed when something is being built or trenched through that exact spot. Tony's does dirt work as well, so if a stump area needs to be excavated and backfilled instead, that can be quoted too.

Why property owners grind stumps

  • The stump is in the way of mowing
  • It is a trip hazard in a yard or walkway area
  • Sprouts keep coming back around the base
  • The area needs to be sodded, seeded or hydroseeded
  • New landscaping, a bed, drive or patio is going in
  • It attracts insects as the wood breaks down

What a stump grinding job may involve

  • Checking access — some machines need a clear path through a gate or between structures
  • Marking or locating anything shallow nearby before grinding
  • Grinding the stump and visible root flare below grade
  • Raking out grindings or leaving them to fill the hole
  • Hauling grindings off and bringing in topsoil where a finished lawn is planned
  • Seeding, sod or hydroseeding as a follow-up if you want grass back

Residential and commercial work

Most grinding is residential — one stump left after a removal, or several old stumps in a yard being cleaned up.

Grinding on commercial property, including islands, medians and lot edges, is handled the same way.

Stump Grinding questions

What is involved in stump grinding?
A grinding wheel cuts the stump and root flare down below ground level. The material left behind is a mix of wood grindings and soil, which can be raked out or used to fill the hole.
Is grinding the same as stump removal?
Not quite. Grinding takes the stump below grade but leaves the deeper roots in place. Full removal means digging the stump and roots out, which leaves a much bigger hole and is usually only needed when something is being built there.
How deep do you grind?
Deep enough to get below grade so the area can be filled and planted. Depth depends on the stump, the root flare and what is around it.
Can I plant grass over a ground stump?
Yes, though grindings hold little nutrition. Removing some of the grindings and bringing in topsoil gives sod or seed a much better start.
Do you grind stumps you did not remove?
Yes. Old stumps left by someone else, or stumps that have been in a yard for years, are a regular job for us.
Do you need access for equipment?
Yes. We look at gates, slopes and tight spots when we price the job so there are no surprises the day of the work.
